Project Overview

A family in Apison, Tennessee needed an overgrown residential landscape area cut back, treated for weeds, and covered with fresh pine straw. Ray Lawns completed the cleanup in four hours using brush trimming, weed eating, RM18 herbicide and pre-emergent, and pine straw installation. The $900 project replaced unmanaged growth and exposed ground with a cleaner, more orderly landscape bed.

The Starting Point (Before)

What Wasn't Working

The residential landscape area had brush and weeds growing throughout, which needed to be refreshed. Cutting only the tallest growth would have left lower weeds in place and would not have prepared the ground for a clean layer of pine straw.

The family wanted the area cut back and reset in one efficient visit. The scope called for clearing the visible overgrowth, treating the exposed area with herbicide and pre-emergent, and covering the ground with fresh pine straw.

Fresh pine straw covers the cleared strip beside a curving black fence. Brush clearing and pine straw installation frame the bright lawn.
The Plan

Our Approach

Ray Lawns organized the project in the order in which each task needed to occur. The crew would begin with the heavier growth, then follow with detailed weed-eating, treat the exposed surface, and install the pine straw only after the area had been fully cleared and prepared.

Reddish bare soil runs beside a black fence after brush clearing. Bright lawn lies left and trimmed green woods rise right with a brush pile ahead.

Brush Clearing First

The bush trimmer would be used first to cut back the heavier brush throughout the project area. This would open the space and make the lower vegetation easier to reach during the next stage of the cleanup.

Weed Control Before Ground Cover

After the larger brush was removed, the crew would use a weed eater to cut the remaining vegetation closer to the ground. RM18 herbicide and pre-emergent would then be applied while the cleared surface was still accessible.

Pine Straw Installed Last

Fresh pine straw would be installed only after the cutting and treatment work was completed. This sequence allowed the new ground cover to be spread over a cleared and treated landscape bed.

The Build (Process)

Step-by-Step Overview

01

Heavy Brush Cutback

Ray Lawns began by using a bush trimmer to reduce the heavier growth across the residential project area. This first step removed the most noticeable overgrowth and opened the landscape bed for more detailed cleanup.

White hydrangeas and vivid red flowers line a curved bed. Tall deep green evergreens form a dense backdrop beside the lawn.
02

Lower-Growth Cleanup

The crew followed with a weed eater to remove lower vegetation and complete the cutback closer to the ground. This prevented smaller weeds and unmanaged growth from remaining beneath the new pine straw.

Black fencing borders a sloped brown mulch bed with glossy green shrubs. A bright blue pool and pale deck sit below near the road.
03

Herbicide and Pre-Emergent Treatment

Once the vegetation had been cut back and the ground was accessible, RM18 herbicide and pre-emergent were applied across the cleared area. The treatment was completed before any new ground cover was installed.

04

Pine Straw Installation

Fresh pine straw was spread over the treated surface to create more consistent ground coverage. Installing the pine straw last completed the landscape reset and gave the bed a cleaner overall appearance.

The Reveal (After)

What Changed

At completion, the brush and lower weeds had been cut back, the cleared ground had been treated, and fresh pine straw covered the area. The new coverage gave the landscape bed a more consistent appearance, rather than leaving the surface dominated by overgrowth and exposed ground.

The full residential cleanup was completed in approximately four hours. The family received the requested landscape reset in a single service visit, with each part of the scope completed before the pine straw was installed.
