The Starting Point (Before)

What Wasn't Working

The existing backyard lawn had uneven grass areas, exposed obstructions, weeds, roots, and rocks, making the space difficult to prepare for a clean sod installation. Before the new Bermuda grass could be installed, the area needed to be cleared, cultivated, and reshaped so the sod would have a better surface to root into.

Because the project was located inside a backyard fence, the Ray Lawns team also had to plan for equipment access and material movement. The preparation process needed to be efficient while still allowing the crew to properly work the soil, remove debris, spread topsoil, and hand-finish the surface before installation

The Plan

Our Approach

Ray Lawns prepared the backyard by correcting surface issues first, then improving the soil base before installing approximately 1,680 square feet of Bermuda sod. The goal was to create a cleaner, more level lawn area inside the fence so the new sod could root properly and grow in with a more consistent surface.

Ground Leveling Prep

Exposed tree roots were ground down before grading to remove obstructions and make the backyard easier to shape.

Soil & Surface Cleanup

The backyard was graded to smooth out uneven spots and create a more level base before the new sod was placed.

Bermuda Sod Placement

The prepared area was fine-graded, hand-raked, and topped with sifted soil where needed before Bermuda sod was laid tightly, piece by piece.

The Build (Process)

Step-by-Step Overview

01

Backyard Preparation

Ray Lawns began by preparing the fenced backyard and grinding down exposed tree roots that could interfere with the finished lawn surface. The crew then used a Dingo mini skid steer equipped with a Harley rake attachment to till and cultivate the existing soil.

02

Soil Grading & Cleanup

As the soil was loosened, weeds, roots, rocks, and other debris were brought to the surface and removed from the area. The team then fine-graded the yard with the mini skid steer and brought in sifted topsoil to improve the grade and create a better base for the sod.

Crews lay fresh sod along a curved driveway, creating a clean green edge under bright leafy trees.
03

Bermuda Sod Installation

Once the soil was spread and hand-raked smooth, the Bermuda grass sod was delivered and installed throughout the backyard. Each piece was fitted tightly against the next to help eliminate gaps, create a cleaner appearance, and leave the area ready for watering and root establishment.

The Reveal (After)

What Changed

The finished backyard had a much cleaner, more complete lawn after the Bermuda sod was installed. What started as an uneven patch of existing grass became a freshly prepared, newly sodded backyard with a smoother grade, tighter lawn coverage, and a more polished look inside the fence.

Functionally, the project provided the customer with a more usable residential backyard, a better growing surface, and a uniform lawn foundation. The new Bermuda sod created an immediate visual upgrade while giving the yard a strong starting point for future watering, rooting, and lawn establishment.
